Warning, creative minds at play
ComedySportz High School League was founded in 1989 as an offshoot of Comedy Sportz LA, a short-form, comedic, improv troupe and one of Los Angeles’s longest-running improv shows.
Through participation in ComedySportz High League, Mira Costa team members are led by student managers and trained by ComedySportz LA professionals. Our students learn the structure of improvisational comedy through a variety of games, and they compete against other regional high schools in a format that resembles a sport (astro-turf and all!) but is really competitive, game-based improv where the audience awards points and teams collaborate to entertain.
Comedy Sportz has been my daughter’s everything during her four years at Mira Costa. A yearlong performance atmosphere with a team mentality that’s mostly student run. She’s laughed. She’s cheered. She’s cried. She’s grown. She’s found her people.
Full of groaner fouls, audience interaction, and games like Beastie Rap and Garth, this is competitive improv at its best and will have you chanting, “Captains to the playing field!” long after the match is over!
In Comedy Sportz, students learn how to build upon each other’s ideas and support each other in a common, creative goal. They learn the fine art of storytelling and how to quickly adapt to narrative situations as they unfold, and they develop collaboration skills they can carry with them into nearly every aspect of their lives. Comedy Sportz players also build deep and powerful friendships that last beyond their high school years.
Students audition for the team during the first couple of weeks
of school each year, and team practices are led by the team’s
co-managers up to twice a week in the evening. An adult, professional coach from Comedy Sportz LA is assigned to the team and participates in monthly coaching sessions and matches. Comedy Sportz students also participate in other fun events such as the Comedy Sportz GameCon Convention, Costa’s annual Lip Sync competition, and the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair.
This is a student-run program with support from their teacher- advisor, Maddie Hutchinson.
